Reward user interactions for a better user experience

... and turn your Call-To-Actions to Call-To-Values

Read time: 3 minutes 5 seconds

Welcome to the 11th edition of my weekly marketing newsletter, friends and foes! It’s slightly shorter than the previous editions. 🥳

Get the same amount of helpful marketing insights in less time.

TL;DR of today’s newsletter:

  • Rewarding your customers

  • Call-to-Values over Call-to-Actions

  • Three links of the week

Let’s dive right in.

Reward your customers 🍩

I have been using Grammarly, a free online writing assistant, for years. And I love how they constantly gamify and reward their users.

Last week, when I was writing content, I suddenly got this notification from Grammarly:

Wow, Really? That’s awesome! 🥹

At that moment, I did not think about whether my writing is becoming more interesting. But I got a pat on the back from Grammarly and it felt nice.

Reward user interactions for a better user experience. These can be done at any stage of the customer journey.

Here are some examples:

  • When a user signs up  Congratulate them for getting this far

  • When a feature is used for the first time (e.g. tweet for the first time, add 5 friends on Facebook, finish a task in Asana) Praise the user for it

  • When they reach a milestone (e.g. having sent 10 e-mails with Beehiiv, completing 10 tasks in Asana) Track user activity and send a milestone message

  • Bonus tip: share a link to additional reading/tips about the event when praising your user

In addition to making your users happy and more motivated to use your product, it is also an efficient way to increase retention.

Ask yourself: Are there any actions that benefit your business that customers are completing during their user journey? Where can I reward my customers and implement simple success messages?

Value over Action

Change your Call-To-Actions (CTA) to Call-To-Values. I first heard it from Chase Diamond on Twitter and it’s helped me a lot since!

It’s a powerful way to rewire your brain regarding CTAs. Best of all, it does not need a lot of explanation. Here are some examples:

  • “Get started” “Create your website”

  • “Subscribe now“ “Become a better marketer“

  • “Book now“ “Relax in Spain“

  • “Download Habit App” “Reach your goals”

The human brain is constantly operating in fast-forward mode – we are always wired to anticipate the future.

So, instead of telling people what to do, tell them what they are getting.

Give people something to look forward to! 🏆

Three links of the week

  • Rewards fuel our motivation. Here’s a look at three brands that use rewards effectively, as a way to inspire your own thinking.

  • Brion O’Connor shares the most common reason why customers don't buy from you online. Here’s how to get your customers to buy quickly.

  • How can you know what people want to read about? Here’s how to write great content that spreads.

What the fuck I’m up to?

My first week as a full-time marketing strategist is behind me. Expect more B2B-focused marketing content in the future – I’ll probably be talking a lot more about performance marketing and conversion rate optimization.

We only have two weeks left in Spain, then we’re heading back to Estonia. Exactly when the weather is getting better, my padel skills are improving, and I’ve found more people to play padel with. 🥹
